B2 - cell division Flashcards
What is differentiation
When cells change depending on their environment
What are unspecialised cells called
Stem cells
Why can’t animal cells redifferentiate
The genes are switched off so when it divides by mitosis they are switched off in the daughter cells as well
What are the two types of plant meristem
Apical meristems allow the plant to grow at roots and shoots and redifferentiate, lateral meristems cause secondary growth at the stem. This allows you to take cuttings.
Where can stem cells be found
Bone marrow, embryos
How does mitosis work
First, everything but chromosomes are duplicated, then chromosomes are duplicated and lined up in the middle of the nucleus, then the chromosomes split and move to the poles of the nucleus, then the nucleus splits, then the cell membrane splits and there are two identical daughter cells.
