B18 - biodiversity and ecosystems Flashcards
why does biodiversity matter
keep food wab, dependant on one another
what is the effect of human population increasing
less resources, less land, more waste
what is bioaccumulation
where chemicals from pesticides/fertilisers increase in concentration as go up the food chain.
what is air pollution
where CO2, SO2 and carbon particulates are released into the air and cause global warming, acid rain and global dimming
what is deforestation and why is it bad
cutting down trees - destroys environments, releases CO2
What is peat and why not to dig it up
Earth rich with carbon from dead plants - releases lots of CO2
what is the difference between global warming and greenhouse effect
global warming - the global temperature increasing
greenhouse effect - greenhouse gases reflecting radiation back at the earth
impacts of global warming
ice caps melting, sea level rise, more extreme weather, changes in seasons affect wildlife
how is biomass transferred and why is most of it lost
eating something, because that thing used lots of it for energy for movement, body temp, growth or waste
what is a pyramid of biomass
level of biomass in each organism in the food chain
what factors affect food security
population, diet, pathogens, environmental changes, conflict
what are the advantages and disadvantages of free range
animals are happier and can move, but is labour intensive, more expensive, and more biomass wasted from movement
what is overfishing
fishing all the fish and not having enough left to breed - unsustainable
what is mycoprotien
protein from fungus
