B11 - hormonal coordination Flashcards
What are the six glands
Thyroid, testis, ovaries, adrenal, pancreas, pituitary
What hormone does the thyroid produce and what does it do
Thyroxine, controls metabolic rate
What hormone do the testis produce and what does it do
Testosterone, male characteristics
What hormones do the ovaries produce and what do they do
Oestrogen and progesterone, female characteristics
What hormone does the adrenal gland produce and what does it do
Adrenaline, fight or flight
What hormones does the pancreas produce and what do they do
Insulin and glucagon, control blood sugar levels
What hormones does the pituitary gland produce and what do they do
FSH and LH, control pregnancy timings, and other hormones to control other glands
What does insulin do
Turns blood glucose into glycogen store in cells
What does glucagon do
Turns glycogen store in cells to blood glucose
What is the difference between type one and type two diabetes
Type one is insulin dependant, pancreas cells damaged and don’t produce enough insulin
Type one is insulin independent, general deterioration of cells (fat people)
What are the phases and hormone levels of the menstrual cycle
Period, then high oestrogen + FSH + LH to release egg, then high progesterone to maintain wall, then period
What is the hormone response when releasing an egg
Pituitary gland releases FSH which makes ovaries mature egg, ovaries release oestrogen which builds uterus lining and stops FSH being released, LH released which releases the egg
What does the pill do to stop pregnancy
Contains oestrogen which stops FSH being released so egg is never matured, if you miss one then egg might be matured so it doesn’t work
What is IVF
In vitro fertilisation, where where a women gets
given FSH then eggs are put in test tube and mixed with sperm, then any successful are put back into women
What is menopause
Where a women stops getting her period - very hormonal
