B4 test terms Flashcards
niche
the role of a species within its ecosystem (biotic interactions and abiotic requirements)
autotroph
can make their own carbon compounds (glucose)
Photoautotrophs
a type of autotroph that makes their own energy from sunlight
chemoautotrophs
a type of autotroph that makes their own energy from oxidizing chemicals
Heterotroph
organisms that rely on other organisms to obtain carbon compounds (glucose)
Holozoic nutrition
type of heterotrophs that use internal digestion (they ingest their food)
consumer
a type of holozoic nutrition (heterotrophic) where organisms eat living/fresh organisms
detritovore
a type of holozoic nutrition (heterotrophic) where organisms eat decaying matter
saprotrophic nutrition
organisms that use external digestion via the release of enzymes (sometimes called decomposers)
obligate aerobes
require O2 to meet their needs
facultative aerobes
can successfully survive without O2 but get more energy using O2
obligate anaerobes
organisms that are killed by O2
limiting factor
any biotic or abiotic factor that determines the distribution of living organisms or that at extremes prevents a species form living in a certain habitat
mixotrophic nutrition
organisms that have the ability to absorb nutrients and photosynthesize
Facultative: could survive with photosynthesis alone
obligate: some nutrients needed require consumption
range of tolerance
the area between two extremes of an abiotic factor that that species can still successfully survive in
