B1g - controlling plant growth Flashcards
What are shoots(2)
Positively phototropic
Negatively geotropic
What are roots(2)
Negatively phototropic
Positively geotropic
Describe auxins(4)
A group of plant hormones which move through the plant in solution
Involved in phototropism and geotropism
Made in the root and shoot tip
Its distribution through the plant is determined by light so it can be unequal
How does auxin bring about shoot curvature(3)
More auxin is found in the shady part of shoots
Higher amount of auxin causes the cells to elongate
Increase in cell length on the shady side of the shoot causes curvature of the shoot towards the light
What do selective weedkillers do
Hormones in them disrupt growth patterns of their target plants without harming other plants
What does rooting powder do
Hormone encourages the growth of roots in stem cuttings so many plants can be obtained from one plant
What does fruit ripening do
Can accelerate or delay ripening of fruit if required for transportation or storage
What does controlling dormancy do
Hormones can be used to speed up or slow down plant growth and bud development
