B15-Ecology Flashcards
Species
Animals that are the same species can breed together to produce fertile offspring.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives.
Community(different species)
A collection of plants and animals that share a habitat
Population(same species)
The number of organisms of a certain species living in a habitat
Competition
A situation where different organisms reauire the same resources
Interdependence
A word that describe how organisms rely on each other
Eauation to find out estimated population size
(Total area/area sampled) * mean no. of organisms counted
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is the interactions of a community of living organism with non-living (abiotic) parts of their environment.
What is a stable community?
A stable community is one where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant
What do organisms require to survive?
Organisms require materials from their surroundings and other living organism to survive and reproduce
Why do species depend on each other to survive?
Within a community, each species depends on other species for food, shelter, pollination, seed dispersal, etc. If one species is removed it can affect the whole community. This is called interdependence.
Some abiotic factor that may affect communites of organisms.
- Light intensity
- temperature
- moisture levels
- soil pH and mineral content
- wind intensity and direction
- the carbon dioxide levels for plants
- the availability of oxygen for aquatic animals.
Biotic factors that may affect communities of organism.
- availability of food
- new predators arriving
- new pathogens
- new competitors.
What are 2 methods used to determine distribution and abundance?
Transect and quadrants
Do aniamls compete?
Animals compete with each other for food, territories, and mates.
