B12-Reproduction and Cell division. Flashcards
What happens in asexual reproduction?
In asexual repdocution, there is no fusion of gametes and only one parent. There is no mixing of genetic information, leading to genetically identical offspring.
What type of cell division is involved in asexual reproduction?
Only mitosis is involved in asexual reproduction.
What happens in sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction involves the joining(fusion) of male and female gametes formed by meiosis. Meiosis lead to the formation of non-identical cells, sperm and egg cells in animals, and pollen and egg cells in flowering plants.
genes
Sections of a chromosome carry specific information; these are called genes
chromosomes
They carry genetic information
alleles
Different forms of same genes sometimes referred to variations
heterozygous
Individual with different alleles for a characteristics.
homozygous
Individual with two identical alleles for a characteristic
phenotype
The physical appearance/biochemistry of an individual for a particular characteristic
genotype
The genetic makeup of an individual for a particular characteristic, for example hair or eye colour.
dominant allele
The phenotype will be apparent in the offspring ever if only one of the allele is inherited.
Recessive
A phenotype that will only show up in the offspring if both of the alleles coding for that characteristic are inherited.
