B1 - Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
How many characteristics do all living organisms share
7
What are the 7 characteristics of living (Think MRS.GREN)
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
What is movement
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing change of position or place
What is sensitivity
The ability to detect or sense stimuli in the internal or external environment and to make appropriate responses.
what is respiration
The chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism.
What is growth
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both
What is reproduction
The processes that make more of the same kind of an organism
What is excretion
The removal from organisms of the waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration), toxic materials, and substances in excess of
requirements
What is nutrition
Taking in of materials for energy, growth and development
For example: plants require light, carbon dioxide, water and ions and animals need organic compounds, ions and usually need water
What is the difference between excretion and egestion
Egestion is the process of removing undigested food as waste i.e feces. Excretion however is the process of removing metabolic waste from living organisms (i.e urine and sweat)
Why is fire not a living organisms
Is not composed of cells. All living organisms have cells
