Attention 1 Flashcards
What is attention?
Focusing on something
What are the properties of attention?
Limited capacity, selection, modulation, vigilance
How do we deploy attention?
Covert (mind’s eye) vs Overt (actual eye)
What is overt attention?
Look at location/object of interest
What is covert attention?
Look at one location but pay attention to another (moving your mind’s eye)
What is the cocktail party effect?
Focus on single conversation while ignoring others
What is dichotic listening?
You can receive a different stimuli in each ear but we have the ability to only focus on one
How do we select what to attend?
Top-down vs Bottom-up
What is top-down attention?
Voluntary and goal-driven
What is bottom-up attention?
Reflexive and stimulus-driven
What is a problem with attention?
Limited capacity which means we can’t process everything available to our sense
Do we intentionally select things to attend (goal-driven) or is attention automatically captured (stimulus-driven)?
Both top-down and bottom-up are true
What are the 2 models of attention?
Late Selection and Early Selection
What is late selection?
Everything is encoded and perceptually processed before selection
What is early selection?
Sensory gating mechanism only select stimuli even make it to perceptual analysis
