ATI Science- Integumentary & Urinary System Flashcards
Function of integumentary system
protection, secretion, communication
Parts of integumentary system
skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, sebaceous glands
secretes sebum (oil) that waterproofs skin
sebaceous glands
helps body get rid of waste & helps w/ thermoregulation
sweat glands
most outer layer of the skin, made of epithelial cells, and has no blood vessels
epidermis
waxy protein that helps waterproof skin
keratin
layer under epidermis; made of connective tissues; has blood vessels, glands, hair follicles elastin collagen fibers
dermis
connective tissue that binds skin to underlying muscles; where fat deposits/ insulates body
subcutaneous/ hypodermis (not a layer of the skin)
homeostatic process that maintains a steady internal body temperature despite changes in external conditions
thermoregulation
increasing the amount and speed of blood flow to and within the skin by widening the blood vessels , reducing body temperature
vasodilation
Narrowing of blood vessels , where less heat will be lost this & maintains the core temperature of the body
vasoconstriction
secretes substances into ducts/openings onto the body’s surface
exocrine glands (sebaceous/holocrine glands & sweat/ eccrine glands)
inhibits water loss from skin; protects against bacteria/ fungal infections
sebum
secrete salty solution of electrolytes & water w/ diff chemicals- glands located in forehead, neck, and back
sweat aka eccrine glands
secrete an oily solution containing macromolecules; glands located in armpits, feet, groin, palms; produce body odor
apocrine/sweat glands
urinary system consists of
kidneys, urinary ducts, bladder
eliminates excess substances while preserving substances needed by the body to function
urinary system
remove waste products from the blood and produce urine
kidneys (right and left)
Layer of kidney (outer to inner)
renal cortex, renal medulla, renal pelvis
tiny, individual filters
nephrons
cluster of capillaries that serve as a filtering unit
glomerulus
Where does kidney receive blood from?
Renal arteries
responsible for the reabsorption and secretion of various solutes and water
PCT. Proximal Convoluted Tubulelocated in kidney
transports urine from the renal pelvis into the bladder
ureter
allows urine to pass outside the body
urethra
which of these body parts do not produce melanin?
Nails (can be found there, but nor produced there)
Pigment that provides color to skin, hair and eyes
melanin
Which of the following components of the human integumentary system is the deepest?
Hypoderms not a layer of the skin doeeee
