first was from 1750-1850 (Great Britian), second was from 1870-1914 (Europe, Russia, US, Japan)
What was the main engine of the FIRST industrial revolution?
Coal and the steam engine
What was the main resource and engine during the SECOND industrial revolution?
Oil and steel and the internal combustion engine was developed to harness the energy of gasoline
What was going on in Egypt during 1450-1900?
Egypt was technically under the Ottoman empire but they mostly ran their own country independetntly because of their strong military and even though the ottoman empire wasn’t able to industrialize egypt still did
Why did the Ottoman empire not industrialize?
they didn’t have enough energy or wealth to invest in industrialization because of their internal corruption and conflicts
What are tariffs?
taxes on imported goods, protected egypt’s developing economy
Why was Great Britain upset with Egypt?
Because egypt was gaining a lot of power and crossing egypt was the easiest way to trade with Asia
Who did Egypt go to war with and what did Great Britain do?
Egypt went to war with the Ottoman empire and Great Britain stepped in and forced egypt to remove their trade barriers, in the end britain was able to keep their power over egypt and stop the industrialization project in egypt

A US commadore who came to Japan with steamships and guns to demand the Japan trade with the US
What is the Meiji Restoration?
agressive state-sponsored program of industrialization to defend themselves from western powers, Japan sough to escape foreign domination by adopting much of the industrial practices that made the west powerful
What are emissaries, where did Japan send them and why?
people sent on a special mission usually a diplomatic representative, Japan sent them to major world powers to adapt their technology, culture, education, and political arrangements to implement in Japan
