What was the Fronde in France?
a resistance movement, there was absolutism so monarchs held all of the power, in order to pay for wars to expand so taxes increased which led to french noibility leading rebellions which were crushed and caused the monarchs to grow more powerful
What was Queen Ana Nazinga’s resistance?
in Africa, Nazinga was concerned about Portugal so allied with the Dutch and the Congo to fight the Portuguese, successful!!
What was the Pueblo revolt?
in North America, oppressive Spanish military efforts led to the Pueblans to be abused, coerced labor and disease decreased the Pueblans population a lot, so the Pueblo violently rebelled against the Spanish and the succeeded temporarily but the Spanish came back and reclaimed their power a decade later
Where were enslaved laborers sent and why?
they were sent from the east to the americas because the amercas’s economy was based off of infrastructure and cash crops
What were maroon societies?
groups of free blacks in Brazil and the Carribean, slaves sometimes ran away and joined the maroon societies
Who did the slave owners try to get rid of and what happened?
They tried to get rid of the maroon societies but they fought back and won because of their location that protected them wih nartual defenses
What was the Stono Rebellion of 1739?
there was so many slaves in South Carolina to produce rice and other goods that enslaved peple became the majority of the population, slaves rebelled and failed but struck fear in the slave-holding colonies
What is the reconquista?
centuries long effort to rid the Iberian peninsula of muslim rule, finally completed in 1492
What happened to Jews after the reconquista?
the new leaders were afraid the people would convert to judiasm if there were jews so jews were expelled from Spain and they fled to Portugal but they were expelled there too because of an alliance with Spain
How were jews treated in the Ottoman empire?
They were welcomed but not fully equal, forced to pay taxes that all non-muslims had to pay
How did the Qing Dynasty respond the ethnic diversities?
The Manchu rulers only allowed the highest jobs to go to Manchu people and Han people couldn’t get these jobs and were forced to wear a certain hairstyle all the time
How did the Mughal empire respond to ethnic diversities?
Akbar showed great tolerance for ethnic minorities and built buildings for each religion
Who were the Russian Boyars and what happened to them?
group made by the aristocratic land-owning class in Russia and they extered great pwer in the administration of the empire for centuries, Peter the Great wanted absolutism so he took power from them and they were abolished
Who were the Ottoman Timars and what happened to them?
land grants made by the ottoman state to an aristocratic class in payment for service to government, usually military service, got taken over by ottoman sultants
