What is cultural diffusion?
the spread of cultural traits through the Silk Roads
What are the Silk Roads?
a vast network of roads and trails that facilitated trade and the spread of culture and ideas across Eurasia in and before the period 1200-1450
What was traded across the Silk Roads and why?
Mainly luxury items - Chinese Silk, to spread everything was veyr expensive and only luxury goods could get the money back
How are all of the places studied in Unit 1 connected?
By networks of exchange
How did the Silk roads expand?
new innovations/commercial practices that made travel easier, increasing use of credit, new banks, transportation, caravanserai, saddles
How did the development of money economies help the expansion of the Silk roads?
Paper money (“flying money”) increased ease of travel and security of transactions
What is caravanserai?
a series of inns and guest houses spread a days journey apart for merchants, provided safety from plunderers (robbers), where cultures were exchanged and diffused
How did saddles help during trade across the silk roads?
Made long distance rides more easy and comfortable, able to carry more goods
How did new trading cities appear because of the Silk roads?
Everyone traveling on the roads stopped in plades to trade and areas became destinations with goods where people started to live
What is Kashgar?
A trading city that appeared because of the Silk roads, located at the intersection of two major routes, built around a river (so good agriculture)
What effect did the silk roads have on the demand for luxury goods?
More demand for luxury goods (silk and porcelain), more demand=more production, led to proto-industrialization
What is proto-industrialization?
Producing more goods than their own population could consume and then sold in diistant markets
