AOB Flashcards
What is an AOB?
There is no vertical overlap between the incisors when the buccal segment teeth are in occlusion
What are the causes of an AOB?
Skeletal: increased lower facial height Habit: digit Soft tissues: tongue activity Localised failure to develop Mouth breathing
What are the broad causes of an AOB?
Skeletal
Soft tissue
Habit
Localised failure of development
What are the skeletal causes of an AOB?
Increased lower face height due to vertical downwards and backwards rotation
What are the soft tissue causes?
People with increased lower facial heights have an increased chance of having incompetent lips and thus to achieve an anterior oral seal they thrust their tongue forwards may be associated with incompetent lips
In which patients with a failure to develop are AOB seen in?
Cleft lip and palate patients
How does mouth breathing lead to an AOB?
People that mouth breathe, since mouth is always open the molars over erupt to gain contact
How do you broadly mange an AOB?
- Accept
- Ortho
- Surgery
When would you accept and AOB?
Mild cases
Patients were there is marked problems and they aren’t motivated to surgery
When would you consider an orthodontic approach to managing an AOB?
If the soft tissue environment and growth are favourable
How can you use ortho appliances?
- Intrude molars by using high pull head gear and buccal capping on a removable appliance or functional appliance
