What is anxiety?
an unpleasant emotional state with subjective fear and uncomdortable physical symptoms
Types of anxiety disorders
- Generalised anxiety disorder
- Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic disorder
- phobic disorder
What factors cause anxiety?
- Past experiences - domestic abuse
- Life - work, money
- Physical and menatal health - chronic pain/ illness, depression
- Genetic factors
- Neurochemistry
What is GAD?
Excessive, persistant and unreasonable worrying
What is panic disorder characterised by?
- Episodic
- unpredictable
- sweating
- angina
- dizzy
- nausea
- fear of dying/ losing control
what is phobic disorder?
Fears of e.g snakes, spiders, public speaking
What does obessesion and compuslive mean in relation to OCD
obessions - unwelcome thought, images, doubts that repeatedly appear in your mind
compulsive - repeatitive activities that you must do
What is PTSD?
Describes a pyschological problem resulting from a traumatic event
e.g. war, car crash, natural disaser, sexual assult
vivid flashbacks and nightmares
describe GAD treatment
- identify cause and educate on treatments and actively monitor
- No improvement - self help groups/ guides and low intensity pyschological innervations
- No improvement - CBT or drug treatment
- No improvement - complex drug and/or pyschological treatment
What treatments are used for people with panic disorders?
- Relaxation techniques
- CBT
- Medication: b blockers, ADS (SSRIs or TC)
What drugs can be given to people with GAD?
- AD: SSRIs or SNRI
- Benzodiazepines: Axiolytics for short term use only
- Pregabalin (AED): Ca2+ channel modulator
