Antivirals Flashcards
obligate parasite
must find a host to live and multiply
Virus
substance that stimulates the production of antibodies and provide immunity against viral diseases
Vaccine
Antiviral meds
Influenza - amantadine, oseltamivir, zanamivir
Hepatitis - adefovir
Herpes - acyclovir, valaciclovir
HIV - zidovudine, lamivudine
Herpes simplex infections
Chicken pox/ shingles, cold sores and genital herpes
Pharmacodynamics of Acyclovir and Valaciclovir
Acyclovir is metabolised to active aciclovir triphosphate
- inhibits viral enzyme
- blocks viral replication
- acting as a false substrate in DNA synthesis
Valaciclovir - pro-drug of Acyclovir
- first pass thru liver converted to acyclovir
Adverse effects of Aciclovir & Valaciclovir
Cotard’s syndrome - rare psychiatric condition causing strong delusions of being DEAD
Neuropsychiatric S&S of aciclovir:
- confusion
- somnolence (drowsiness)
- hallucinations
- associated with renal impairment
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) contains two antiviral meds:
tenofovir and emtricitabine
