Antiphospholipid Syndrome Flashcards
What is anti-phospholipid syndrome?
Disorder associated with anti-phospholipid ABs where blood becomes prone to clotting
What type of state is a patient with antiphospholipid syndrome in?
Hyper-coagulable state
Main associated issues with antiphospholipid syndrome?
Thrombosis and pregnancy complications
Which antiphospholipid ABs i antiphospholipid syndrome associated with?
-Lupus anticoagulant
Anticardiolipin ABs
Anti-Beta-2Glycoprotein 1 ABs
What do the antibodies associated with antiphospholipid syndrome interfere with?
Coagulation & create hypercoagulable state
Why does antiphospholipid syndrome occur?
- Can occur on its own
- Secondary to an AI condition especially SLE
What is antiphospholipid syndrome associated with?
- Venous thromboembolism
- Arterial thrombosis
- Pregnancy complications
- Livedo reticularis
- Libmann-Sacks endocarditis
- Thrombocytopenia
What is livedo reticularis?
Purple lace like rash gives mottled skin appearance
What is Libmann-Sacks endocarditis?
Types of non-bacterial endocarditis where there are growths on valves
-Associated with SLE & antiphospholipid syndrome
Which valve does Libmann-Sacks endocarditis usually affect?
Mitral valve
Diagnosis of anti-phospholipid syndrome?
History of thrombosis or pregnancy complications + ABs
- Lupus anticoagulant
- Anticardiolipin ABs
- Anti-Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 ABs
Management of anti-phospholipid syndrome?
- Long term warfarin with INR range of 2-3 to prevent thrombosis
- Pregnant women started on LMWH + aspirin to reduce risk
Warfarin contraindicated in pregnancy
