Tricyclic antidepressants
Diminish reuptake of monamine neurotranmitters
Used for OCD, enuresis, panic attacks, pain, and migraines
Anticholinergic side effects
Easier to OD than other anti-depresants. Can be fatal with 10x daily dose.
Prolongs QT interval
Generals for MAOI
Block the enzyme that breaks down tyramine, so foods with tyramine should be avoided. Excess tyramine leads to toxic levels of catecholamines and HTN emergencies
Large side effect profile.
Amitriptyline/Elavil
Tricyclic antidepressant for major depression, bipolar, and migraine
Increases Serotonin and NE
Causes dizziness and marked drowsiness
Withdrawal possible
Fluoxetine/Prozac
SSRI for major depression, OCD, bulimia, and panic disorder
potential for serotonin syndrome
Sexual dysfunction side effects
Duloxetine/Cymbalta
SNRI for depression, anxiety, painful neuropathy, and fibromyalgia
Bupropion/Wellbutrin
Norepinephrine and Dopamine reuptake inhibitor and a nicotine receptor antagonist
used for major depression, bipolar, ADD, and smoking cessation
Sides: HA, insomnia, dry mouth, tremors, anxiety, sweating
Zyban
Wellbutrin as a smoking cessation drug.
Takes 5-7 days to reach a steady state in the blood so should be started a week before intended quit date
150 mg/day x 3 days, then 150 mg BID for 7-12 weeks
Levomefolic acid/ Deplin
Folate supplement that is only available as a prescription. Enhances effectiveness of SSRI
