Antibodies Flashcards
IgG location and structure
Structure: Monomer
• Location: Found in all body fluids
-the most abundant antibody
Function of IgG
• Function: protects against toxins, and pathogen, & readily activate complement
IgM structure and location
Structure: Pentamer
• Location: Mainly in the blood and lymph fluid
IgM function
Function: First antibody to respond during an infection; activates complement.
IgA structure and location
Structure: Dimer
• Location: Found in mucous membranes, saliva, tears, and breast milk
IgA function
Function: Protects body surfaces that are exposed to outside foreign substances; prevents colonization by pathogens.
IgE structure and location
Structure: Monomer
• Location: Bound to allergens (variable end) and mast cells and basophils (constant end)
IgE function
Function: Protects against parasitic worms; responsible for allergic reaction by triggering bounded cells to release histamine
IgD structure and location
Structure: Monomer
• Location: Found in small amounts in the tissues that line the belly or chest
IgD function
functions as a receptor on B cells that have not been exposed to antigens.
