Q

What are the characteristics of the hypoglossus muscle?

A

Attaches inferiorly to the body and greater horns of the hyoid bone
Courses superiorly to attaches to tongue
Posterior and deep to mylohyoid with a gap for passage of hypoglossal and lingual nerves
Innervated by the hypoglossal nerves

Q

What are the contents of the submandibular triangle?

A

Submandibular gland-occupies most of the triangle
Facial vein-superficial to the submandibular gland
Facial artery-deep to the submandibular gland
Submandibular lymph nodes-adjacent to the gland
Hypoglossal nerve-innervates muscles of the tongue

Q

What are the characteristics of the carotid arterial system?

A

Right common carotid is a branch of the brachiocephalic trunk
Left common carotid is a branch of the aortic arch
Common carotid bifurcates into an internal carotid and an external carotid arteries
Carotid body is a chemoreceptor found near the bifurcation and monitor the level of oxygen

Q

What are the characteristics of the internal carotid artery?

A

Has no branches in the neck
Contains a carotid sinus
Carotid sinus is a dilation at the beginning and serves as a baroreceptor

Q

What are the characteristics of the external carotid?

A

Possesses 8 branches: 3 anteriorly, 2 posteriorly and medially the ascending pharyngeal artery
Courses through the parotid gland and terminally divides into:
Superficial temporal-supplies the temporal region of scalp and face
Maxillary artery- deep to to the mandible through the infratemporal fossa, supplies muscles of mastication, meninges, nasal and palatine regions

Q

What are the 3 anterior branches of the external carotid artery?

A

Superior thyroid artery-supplies the upper part of the thyroid gland (superior branch supplies larynx)
Lingual artery-deep to hypoglossus to reach the tongue
Facial artery-may arise from a common stem with the lingual artery

Q

What are the characteristics of the internal jugular vein?

A

Has dilations at its origin (superior bulb) and its inferior end (inferior bulb)
Inferior bulb possesses a valve to prevent blood flow toward the head
Deep cervical lymph nodes found along its surface
Unites with the subclavian vein to form the brachiocephalic vein

16
Q

What are the contents of the muscular triangle?

A
Infrahyoid muscles (strap muscles)
Thyroid gland
17
Q

Which are the bones and cartilages of the anterior neck?

A

Hyoid bone-U-shaped bone with lesser and greater horns opens posteriorly
Thyroid cartilage-shield-shaped inferior to hyoid bone
Thyrohyoid membrane-connects the hyoid and the thyroid cartilage
Cricoid cartilage-inferior to the thyroid cartilage, superior to first tracheal rings
Tracheal cartilages-form trachea, incomplete posteriorly

18
Q

What are the characteristics of the thyroid gland?

A

Largest endocrine gland
Has 2 large lobes connected at midline by the isthmus
Isthmus is located at the level of tracheal rings 2-4
Lobes are lateral to the larynx and trachea

19
Q

What are the characteristics of the parathyroid glands?

A

2 pairs of small glands attached to the posterior surface of the thyroid gland
Involved in calcium level regulation

20
Q

What are the characteristics of the roof of the neck?

A

Junction between the neck and the thorax

Contains subclavian vein and artery, vagus and phrenic nerves, sympathetic trunk

21
Q

What are the characteristics of the subclavian artery?

A

Runs posterior to anterior scalene
Divides into 3 part:
Part1-from origin to medial border of scalene gives vertebral artery, internal thoracic artery(mammary) and thyrocervical trunk
Thyrocervical comprises transverse cervical, suprascapular and inferior thyroid arteries
Part 2 gives costocervical trunk
Part 3 gives dorsal scapular which innervates rhomboids, May come from transverse cervical (deep branch of transverse cervical)
