Attachments: External surfaces of ribs 5-12. Linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior half of iliac crest
Innervation: Thoracoabdominal (T7-T11) & Subcostal (T12) nerve
Action: Flexion and contralateral rotation of trunk
Internal Oblique
Attachments: Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest, inguinal ligament. Inferior border of ribs 10-12, linea alba, pecten pubis
Innervation: Thoracoabdominal, subcostal, and 1st lumbar nerves
Action: Flexion and ipsilateral rotation of trunk
Rectus Abdominis
Attachments: Pubic symphysis & pubic crest. Xiphoid process and 5th & 7th costal cartilages
Innervation: Thoracoabdominal nerves
Action: Flexes trunk, compresses abdominal viscera, pure flexion
Transvers Abdominis
Attachments: Internal surfaces of 7-12 costal cartilages, thoracolumber fascia, iliac crest, & inguinal ligament. Linea alba, pubic crest, pecten pubis
Innervation: Thoracolumbar, subcostal, and L1 nerves
Action: Compresses abdominal viscera
Purpose of muscles of abdominal wall
Support of abdomen
Protect underlying viscera
Increase abdominal pressure
Move trunk and maintain posture
Flexion of Trunk
Rectus abdominis
Psoas Major
Ipsilateral Rotation of Trunk
Internal Oblique
Erector Spinae (iliocostalis & longissimus)
Contralateral Rotation of Trunk
