Anchor Work Flashcards
Anchor in 25m of water, how much cable should you put out?
Amount of cable to lay out is 1.5 x the square root of the depth!
Therefore:
Square root of 25m is 5
5 x 1.5 = 7.5 shackles.
Where would you find the anchor certificate for a surveyor?
The chain registry or lifting register.
What term is used to describe the crossing of the anchor cables, when both cables are being used at the same time.
A foul hawse
Going down river, with tide flowing out the river with you, if you needed to turn around, how would you do it in as little sea room as possible?
A Snubbing Round:
A tighter turn in a tight sea space can be achieved by means of one of the ships anchors, in the operation of snubbing round on the weight of the cable.
What’s does a pool anchor look like?
What is a Running Moor?
Using two anchors to moor, you will drop your first anchor and then drive up tide and drop the second anchor!
List various types of mooring tactics?
- Single anchor moor
- Open moor (using both anchors)
- Mediterranean moor
- Running moor(using both anchors against tidal changes in opposite directions and using the boat to do the work, drop your first anchor down current/wind first)
- Standing moor(using both anchors and by letting the tide do the work, so drop anchor up current first)
- Snubbing around(drop on the run and spin around)
- Laying an offshore anchor while docking.
What’s a fouled Hawse?
When you have two anchors out and you’ve got a twist in them, preventing you from retrieving either anchor via the hawse pipe.
See diagram for how to untangle it, using lines and pulleys to take weight of anchor cable and unlink the lugless joining shackle, to untwist the chain and connect it back together!
What would you do if your anchor got fouled on a submarine cable!
You would lower your anchor straight back down on the seabed.
Release the anchor by disconnecting the luggless joining shackle where suitable.
Buoy it so you know where it is.
Inform the coast guard or port area.
Inform your Flag state and ask for dispensation!
Inform DPA
Raise non conformity
How do you hang off an anchor from shoulder position?
Why would we need to do this?
See diagram
This operation would be needed when required to change or rejoin a lugless joining shackle to two lengths of chain.
What are the different types of anchors?
See diagram.
Preparing for anchoring, what would we consider and plan for?
In the construction of any anchor plan the following should be considered:
• Weather forecast obtained.
• That favorable shelter is provided at the intended position.
• The position as charted is free of any underwater obstructions.
• Intended position of anchoring of the vessel.
• Available swinging room at the intended position.
• Depth of water at the position, at both high and low water times.
• The ship’s course of approach towards the anchorage position.
• The ship’s speed of approach towards the anchorage position.
• Time to engage manual steering established.
• Defined positions of stopping engines and operating astern propulsion (single Anchor Operation).
• State of tide ebb/flood determined for the time of anchoring.
• That the defined position is clear of through traffic.
• The holding ground for the anchor is good.
• The position of the anchor at point of release.
• The amount of cable to pay out (scope based on several variables).
• Position monitoring systems confirmed.
