Anatomy - Somatic Sensation Flashcards
Describe the pathway of somatic sensation.
Sensory receptors
Ascending pathways (discriminative pathway, non-discriminative pathway)
Cerebral neuronal circuits
What is an important thing to remember about receptors?
They all function as nociceptors (respond to damaging stimuli that result in pain)
What are exteroreceptors?
Outside the body
Sensitive to stimuli arising outside the body
What are interoreceptors?
Sensitive to stimuli within the body
What are proprioceptors?
Sensitive to internal stimuli
Advise the brain of body movement
Name the general senses which have receptors.
Tactile sensation
Temperature
Pain
Muscle sense (provided by proprioceptors)
What is the structure of receptors of the general senses?
Either free nerve endings or encapsulated nerve endings
