What are hypodense structures on a CT scan?
Infarctions/tumours
What are hyperdense structures on a CT scan?
Calcifications/haemorrhage
What does bone vs CSF appear on CT scan?
Bone is bright
CSF is dark
T1 weighted scans vs T2 weighted scans
T1: contrast between grey and white matter, grey matter - white, white matter = grey
T2: shows oedema, grey matter = grey, white matter = white
Advantages of CT
CT quicker, cheaper, less frightening Fresh blood shows clearly as strong white signal Blood is not clearly imaged in MRI CT images bone very well CT shows calcification well
What is the first choice for emergency imaging of the head?
CT scan
How do we locate the brain on a CT?
Brain is small at front, large at back
Cerebellum only visible in posterior third
Brainstem visible from middle of coronal set
