Anatomy of the lateral pelvic wall Flashcards
Two main ligaments of the lateral pelvic wall
The sacrospinous ligament
The sacrotuberous ligament
The main muscle of the lateral pelvic wall
Obturator internus
What is the name of the canal which passes through the obturator internus?
Obturator canal (for the obturator nerve)
What artery do most of the arteries of pelvis and perineum arise from? What are the exceptions to this rule?
The internal iliac.
The gonadal arteries (testicular and ovarian)- they arise from the abdominal aorta
what is interesting about the inferior vesical artery?
Only present in males- replaced in females by the vaginal artery
Describe the blood supply to the male perineum
Most branches from the internal pudendal, which terminates as the deep and dorsal arteries of penis.
Name two important arterial anastamoses in the female pelvis
Uterine -> ovarian
Uterine -> vaginal
Where does blood from the pelvis mainly drain to?
Internal iliac
Obturator nerve arises from…
anterior rami of spinal nerves L2-L4
The sciatic nerve arises from…and supplies…
L4-S3
Flexors of knee, and all muscles in the lower leg and foot
The pudendal nerve arises from…. and supplies…
S2-S4
Sensory and motor functions to structures of the perineum
The pelvis/perineum derives parasympathetic innervation via…
the pelvic splanchnic nerves arising from S2-S4
Lymphatic drainage from the gonads
Usually to the aortic/caval nodes (lumbar)
Lymphatic drainage from the perineum
superficial inguinal nodes
Lymphatic drainage from most of the pelvis
Internal or external iliac nodes
