Anatomy of the Hand and Wrist Flashcards
What is the palm of the hand also known as?
Volar surface
What is the back of the hand also known as?
Dorsal surface
What is the sequence of bones in the hand from proximal to distal?
Carpals Metacarpals Proximal phalanges Intermediate phalanges Distal phalanges
What are the carpal bones of the hand?
Scaphoid Lunate Triquetrum Pisiform Trapezium Trapezoid Capitate Hamate
What is the possible difficulty that can arise from a scaphoid fracture?
Retrograde blood supply, more difficult to heal and risk of proximal part developing avascular necrosis
What can be palpated in the anatomical snuffbox?
Radial artery Radial styloid process Scaphoid Trapezium Base of 1st metacarpal
What are the names of the flexors leading from the arm into the wrist?
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Palmaris longus
Flexor carpi radialis
Pronator teres
How can you test for the absence of palmaris longus?
With wrist slightly flexed, oppose thumb and little finger
What is the importance of the palmaris longus?
Used in tendon transfers (autografts)
What does the FDP act on and how can it be tested?
Only tendon to act on DIPJ
Isolate DIPJ in finger to test
What does the FDS act on?
Two tendons acting at PIPJ
How can you test the FDS?
Hold other fingers out straight
What are the extensors found in the wrist?
Extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis longus
Extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi radialis brevis
Extensor pollicis longus
Extensor digitorum communis and extensor indicis
Extensor digiti minimi
Extensor carpi ulnaris
How is Allens test performed?
Occlude both arteries at the wrist
Open and release fist until blanched
Release ulnar artery
