anatomical terms Flashcards
what are anatomical terms
precise use of language to define position, direction and location in the body
what does superior mean
towards the head or upper part of a structure
what does inferior mean
towards the feet, or lower part of a structure
what does anterior/ventral mean
nearer to or at the front of the body
what does posterior/dorsal mean
nearer to or at the back of the body
what does medial mean
nearer to the midline or midsagittal plane
what does lateral mean
farther from the body midline or midsagittal plane
what does proximal mean
nearer to the attachment of a limb to the trunk; nearer to the point of origin
what does distal mean
farther from the attachment of a limb to the trunk; far from the point of origin
what does superficial mean
toward or on the body surface
what does deep mean
away from the surface of the body
what is the sagittal plane
vertical plane that divides the body or organ into left and right sides
what is the midsagittal plane
runs through the midline
what is the parasagittal plane
divides the body or organ into unequal right and left sides
what is the frontal or coronal plane
divides the body or organ into anterior and posterior portions
what is the transverse plane
divides body into superior and inferior portions
what is a body cavity
spaces within the body that contains, protects, separates and supports internal organs
what is the cranial cavity
formed by the cranial bones (skull) and contains the brain
what is the vertebral (spinal) canal
formed from the bones of the vertebral column and contains the spinal cord
what is the thoracic cavity
the chest cavity which contains the heart, lungs associated blood vessels and respiratory organs
what is the abdominopelvic cavity
extends from the diaphragm to the groin
