Alveolar/Pulmonary Ventilation Flashcards
What is the anatomical dead space volume?
150ml
What is anatomical dead space?
The volume of gas occupied by the conducting airways.
This gas is not available for exchange.
What is the average tidal volume?
500ml
What can the lung capacity vary between?
1L-6L
Define ventilation.
Movement of air in and out of the lungs
Define pulmonary ventilation.
Total air moved in/out of the lungs
Define alveolar ventilation.
Fresh air getting to the alveoli and therefore available for gas exchange.
What are both types of ventilation measured in?
L/min
How do you calculate total pulmonary ventilation?
Tidal volume (ml) x respiratory rate (breaths/min).
How do you calculate alveolar ventilation?
(Tidal Volume - dead space aka 150ml) x respiratory rate
->if you’re confused, watch the lecture again as Dr Jack explains it v well! :)
What kind of breathing pattern is more likely to be described as hypoventialtion?
Shallow, rapid breaths as not enough air is getting to the alveoli.
What kind of breathing pattern is more likely to be described as hyperventilation?
Long, deep breaths as more air is getting to the alveoli.
What does Dalton’s Law state?
States that the total pressure of a gas mixture is the sum of the pressures of the individual gases.
Where does the CO2 in our blood and cells from?
The body as we make it.
NOT from the air.
Define partial pressure.
The pressure of a gas in a mixture of gases is equivalent to the percentage of that particular gas in the entire mixture multiplied by the pressure of the whole gaseous mixture
