Adult Stem Cells And Stem Cell Niches Flashcards
Where are adult stem cells found?
In most tissues in the adult organsim, even 'everlasting tissues' Bone marrow Skin GI tract lining Liver Pancreas Adipose tissue Brain heart Skeletal muscle
What is a stem cell niche?
A discrete anatomical, topographical district of a tissue in which stem cells are found and stemness is maintained
What helps stem cells in niches to retain stemness?
Close contact with non-stem cell populations
What role does the stem cell niche play?
It forms a special microenvironment and cells within the niche generate or transmit stimuli that regulate the stem cell self renewal and the generation of progeny cells
Do adult stem cells have the same differentiating capacity as ES cells?
No, far less.
What happens when adult stem cells lose the capacity of self perpetuation?
They give rise to cells with restricted developmental potential and are called progenitor cells
