Addison's disease Flashcards
What is Addison’s disease caused by?
The autoimmune destruction of
the adrenal gland, it can be a complication of tuberculosis.
What hormones does Addion’s disease impact?
Both mineral corticoid(aldosterone) and glucocorticoid (cortisol) are impacted
Treatment consists of oral replacement therapy
Treatments of Addison’s disease consists
What are the two forms of Adrenal Cortical Insufficiency?
-Primary or Addison’s disease which is caused by the destruction of the
adrenal gland
- Secondary which is caused by a disorder in the HPA system
Why is ACTH elevated in Addison’s disease?
The HPA feed back loop isn’t functioning do to the low levels of
Cortisol
What is Adrenal crisis (also known as Addisonian crisis and acute adrenal insufficiency)
A medical emergency and potentially life-threatening situation requiring immediate emergency treatment.
What are the risk factors of an adrenal crisis?
e physical stress such as infection, dehydration, trauma, or surgery, adrenal gland or pituitary
gland injury, and ending treatment with steroids such as prednisone or
hydrocortisone too earlly
What is the role of ACTH
ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to low levels
of cortisol.
What is the hypophyseal portal?
A system of blood vessels/ The portal vessels deliver blood containing
regulatory factors to the capillary network
within the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
The superior hypophyseal artery function
artery delivers blood
to the capillary network in the median
eminence
The inferior hypophyseal artery delivers
blood to the posterior lobs of the pituitary gland
Hypophyseal veins carry blood containing the
pituitary hormones to the cardiovascular
system for delivery to the rest of the body
The Pituitary Gland:
Releases nine important peptide hormones
Hormones from the pituitary bind to membrane receptors and use ____
cAMP as second messenger
What re the 9 hormones secreted by the the anterior pituitary gland?
ACTH
TSH
GH
PRL
FSH
LH
MSH
ADH
OXT
What does ACTH stimulate?
Cortisol
