what is acute leukaemia?
a clonal malignancy of marrow/ blood where there is abnormal proliferation and maturation causing an excess of blasts and loss of haemopoietic reserve
what are the 2 types of acute leukaemia?
acute lymphoblastic
acute myeloid
what is acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ?
malignant disease of lymphocytes
the most common childhood cancer!!
what happens in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
get marrow failure- anaemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia
bone pain
high WCC and involved extra medullary areas e.g CNS, lymph nodes
who is more likely to get acute myeloid leukaemia?
the elderly (>60)
in subtypes can get gum infiltration/ cogaulation defects
what invetsigations would you want to do?
blood count and film
coagulation screen
bone marrow aspirate and do immunophenotyping
how do you treat acute leukaemia?
chemo!
ALL- can last up to 2-3 years! :(
