Actinobacillus (Ex2) Flashcards
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae general features
- very important disease in swine rearing
- younger pigs (
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae virulence factors
- adhesion: fimbriae
- XXX: Fe necessary
- exotoxins: Apx toxins
- capsule
- LPS
- OMPs
- Enzymes
- heat shock proteins
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae exotoxins
- RTX: make pores in cells
- recombinant toxins: lung lesions’
- 1: strong hemolytic and cytolytic effects
- 2: weak hemolytic and cytolytic effects
- 3: strong cytolytic
- 4: only expressed in vivo, necessary for full virulence
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae symptoms
- respiratory distress
- general symptoms
- hyperacute: death
- acute: coughing, blood
- fibrinous pleuritis, hemorrhagic nectrotizing pneumonia
- adhesive pleuritis
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Diagnosis
- culture: samples need to be fast in lab, not resistant in environment
- slow grower
- NAD dependent
- CO2 enriched media
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae treatment
- hygiene
- antimicrobials: not much resistance
- vaccine: best with Apx, TBP, and type 4 fimbriae
Actinobacillus suis general features
- obligate symbiotic
- facultative pathogenic
- carriers: tonsils and vagina
- pathogenic for mice
- sporadic
Actinobacillus suis symptoms
- acute: young animals, mortality
- less acute: older animals, general symptoms, respiratory distress, polyarthritis
- Adult: SQ abscesses, anorexia, fever, meningitis
Actinobacillus equuli symptoms
- bronchitis, pleuritis, pneumonia
- foal: septicemia, sleep foal disease, enteritis, slimy pus
- adult: abortions, septicemia, localization in joints
Actinobacillus lignieresii general features
- wooden tongue, timber tongue
- obligate symbiont
- facultative pathogen
- inhabitant of nasopharynx
Actinobacillus lignieresii etiology
- contaminated surgical material of vet
- lesions at surgical sites
Actinobacillus lignieresii lesions
- mainly tongue
- capsule of connective tissue with multiple granulomas containing yellow pus and sulfur granules
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale predisposing factors
- stress
- respiratory infections
- high density
- ventilation
- ammonia concentrations
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale symptoms
- sneezing, nose exudate, coughing, depression, swelling sinus, facial edema, anorexia, dyspnea
- low mortality
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale diagnosis
- bacterial culture: difficult, slow growth, frequently overgrown, needs CO2
- ELISA
