define AAA
A
this is dilation of the abdominal aorta by more than 50% its normal diameter

presentation of AAA
A
- pain
- trashing (limb ischaemia)
- rupture causes sudden onset epigastric pain that radiates to the back

diagnosis of AAA
A
- pulsatile, expansile mass
- duplex ultrasound
- CT scan with contrast (shows rupture)

management of AAA
A
- intervention if symptomatic or more than 5.5cm and expanding rapidly
- EVAR (stent)- endovascular aneurysm repair
