A&P Chapter 10 Flashcards
Origin
fixed end
proximal portion of muscle
Insertion
mobile end
Distal end of muscle
Belly
portion between origin and insertion.
Action
movement accomplished when contracted
Agonist
muscle that does certain movements
Antagonist
muscle that opposes agonist
Synergist
muscles working together for a movement
Pennate
Fasciculi arranged around tendon
Straight
fasciculi arranged parallel to long axis
Orbicular
arranged in a circular around the opening.
Flexion
muscles deep within the neck along the anterior margins of the vertebral bodies.
Extension
posterior neck muscles attach attached to occipital bone.
Rotation and Abduction
lateral and posterior groups.
occipitofrontalis
raises the eyebrows
orbicularis oculi
closes the eyelids
zygomaticus major
smiling
Mentalis
chin dimple
Mastication
chewing
Tongue movement
Intrinsic muscles: entirely within the tongue, involved in changing the shape of the tongue.
Extrinsic muscle: attached to the tongue; moves the tongue.
Palatopharyngeus
elevates the pharynx
Salpingopharyngeus
constricts pharynx to force food into esophagus.
opens to auditory tube between pharynx and inner ear.
Scalene
lifts 1st and 2nd ribs during forced breathing.
External Intercostals
lift ribs during resting breathing
Internal Intercostals
depress ribs during forced exhalation
Diaphragm
dome shaped muscle that flattens during contraction. Cannot survive without it and phrenic nerve.
Linea Alba
vertical line of connective tissue
Tendinous intersection
transects rectus abdominus into segments.
External abdominal obliques
flexes and rotates abdomen
Internal abdominal obliques
flexes and rotates abdomen
Transversus abdominus
compresses abdominal wall.
Pelvic Diaphragm
coccygeus and levator ani(reproduction)
Perineum
diamond shaped; urogenital triangle and anal triangle.
Extension of the Elbow
triceps brachii
Flexion of the elbow
brachialis, biceps brachii, and brachioradialis
supination
supinator (up)
pronation
pronator(down)
Retinacula
bands of deep fascia, which hold tendons of muscles of forearm, blood vessels, and nerves.close to wrist.
Illiopoas
Flex the hip. Consists of illiacus and psoas major.
Gluteus maximus
buttocks; maximus force at a 45 degree angle.
Quadriceps Femoris
anterior surface of thigh
- extension of the leg of the knee
- rectus femoris also flexes the hip
- insert by common tendonon and around the patella
- patellar tendon extends from patella to tibial tuberosity.
Sartorius
flexes the hip and knee, laterlly rotates thigh.
Medial thigh muscles
adduction
posterior thigh muscle
hamstrings. Flexion and rotation of the knee.
Calf
Gastrocnemious and soleus
Achilles tendon
Calcaneal tendon (anchored) - involved in plantar flexion of the foot.
