9.2 Pop Eco Flashcards
How does death, birth, immigration, and emigration affect pop size?
Increase: birth and immigration
Decrease: death and emigration
What is the difference between an exponential graph and a logistic graph?
Exponential: larger the population, larger it grows, happens in ideal conditions with few limiting factors
Logistic: pop growth is slow in beginning and when pop nears carrying capacity
What does the variables N, N0, r, t, K, dN/dt stand for in the growth models?
N= pop size
N0= initial pop size
r= max per capita growth rate
t= time
K= carrying capacity
dN/dt= pop growth rate
What is the definition of density-dependent?
Effect is dependent on the density of the pop
What is an example of density-dependent?
Disease, competition, predation
What is the definition of density-independent?
Effect is not related to the pop
What is an example of density-independent?
Climate, natural resources, pollution
How does exponential and logistic growth models change when r, N, or K change and why?
