3.2 Molecules Flashcards
Carbohydrates
-Monomer: Monosaccharide
-Polymer: Poly/disaccharide
-Elements: C,H,O
-Functional Groups: hydroxyl
-Function: provides energy to the body, gives structural support to a cell
-Structure: ring/pentagonal shape, polysaccharide has three monosaccharides connected together
Lipids
-Monomer: Fatty acids, glycerol
-Polymer: Triglycerides, phospholipids
-Elements: C,H,O
-Functional Groups: Carboxyl, methyl
-Function: stores energy, provides insulation, building block for hormones, important constitute of cellular membranes
-Structure: branched/linear, long chains of carbon with hydrogen attached , one carboxyl group at end of monomer, polymer is three monomers attached to a central bond
Proteins
-Monomer: Amino Acids
-Polymer: Polypeptides
-Elements: C,H,O,N
-Functional Groups: Amino, carbonyl
-Function:
-Structure: branched, shaped “human”-like, polymer has multiple monomers linked together in a linear manner
Nucleic Acids
-Monomer: Nucleotides
-Polymer: DNA, RNA
-Elements: C,H,O,N,P
-Functional Groups: Phosphate, amino, hydroxyl
-Function: makes up DNA and RNA which is responsible for all genetic information
-Structure: ring/branched, pentagonal/hexagonal rings with a phosphate group attached, polymer is either linear or “square” shaped
