10.3 Ecology Flashcards
Ecological vs. Primary vs. Secondary Succession
Ecological- the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time
Primary- there is no soil intact, normally takes place after a volcano
Secondary- soil is intact, normally takes place after a fire
Pioneer Species vs. Seral Stages vs. Climax Community
Pioneer- first species to inhabit an area
Seral- in between stage
Climax- the “endpoint” of succession within the context of a particular climate and geography
Species Richness vs. Evenness
Richness- number of species in an area
Evenness- abundance/proportion of a species
Genetic vs. Ecological Diversity
Genetic- related to the size of a pop
Ecological- range habit types variation within ecosystems
Keystone vs. Invasive Species
Shannon-Wiener Index
Higher the number, higher the diversity
