5.2 Cell Replication Flashcards
What, when, and where does DNA replication occur?
-Makes more DNA
-Before cell division
-In nucleus/ cytoplasm
What does helicase, primase, DNA polymerase III and I, and ligase do during DNA replication?
Helicase- unzips the DNA strand by breaking the hydrogen bonds between the base pairs
Primase- makes RNA primers that mark where to start building the new strand
DNA polymerase III- adds new nucleotides used to build the new strand
DNA polymerase I- removes RNA primers and replaces them with nucleotides
Ligase- glues together Okazaki fragments created by the lagging strand
What’s the difference between the leading and lagging strand?
Leading- continuously builds from 5’ to 3’
Lagging- makes fragments, builds 5’ to 3’
