9 - Nasal Cavity & Paranasal Sinuses Flashcards
Respiratory system
external environment exposure
portion superior to the hard palate
Nasal cavity divided into
the R & L nasal cavities with nasal septum separating them
opens anteriorly thru the nares
opens posteriorly into the nasopharynx
Nasal Cavity & Paranasal Sinuses - Roof is
curved and more narrow, except at the posterior portion
Nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses Floor is wider than
the roof
also divided into anterior & posterior portions
Nasal & Frontal bones =
anterior roof
Cribriform plate of ethmoid bone =
central part of roof
Body of sphenoid bone =
posterior roof
Palatine process of maxilla = =
anterior ¾ of floor
Horizontal plate of palatine bone =
posterior ¼ floor
Frontonasal roof =
anterior roof
Ethmoidal roof =
central roof
Sphenoidal roof =
posterior roof
4 paranasal air sinuses:
ethmoidal air cells
sphenoid,
maxillary and frontal paired sinuses
all are lined by respiratory mucosa – ciliated and mucous secreting.
all open into the nasal cavities
all are innervated by branches of the trigeminal nerve
Frontal Sinus - Found within
frontal bone lateral to midline
Frontal sinus Drains via
frontonasal duct / canal into infundibulum
Hiatus semilunaris
Frontal sinus - From here enters
middle meatus of nasal cavity
Anterior to ethmoidal bulla
Maxillary Sinus made up of
3 walls & appears pyramidal in coronal section
Superior wall –
Medial wall –
Lateral wall
Maxillary sinus Superior wall
separates sinus from orbit
Max sinus Medial wall – separates
sinus from nasal cavity
Max sinus Lateral wall – separates
sinus from infratemporal fossa
Nasal Cavity shares border with
Oral cavity, orbit, anterior cranial fossae
Nasal Cavity - shares neurovascular bundle
branches with oral cavity
Roots of upper teeth may project into
max sinus - May be covered by mucoperiosteum
Infection from a decaying tooth may spread into
sinus
Extraction of tooth may tear
membrane
Produces fistula between mouth & maxillary sinus
Patient then unable to blow cheeks out
air from mouth escapes via fistula into sinus & nasal cavity
Arterial Supply of Nasal Cavity
Anterior ethmoidal brs
Posterior ethmoidal brs
Sphenopalatine brs
