5 - Parotid & Temporal & TMJ Flashcards
Parotid gland is just inferior to
ext. acoustic meatus
Swelling of parotid gland will
push ear superolateral
Mumps
Retromandibular Vein formed by
superficial temporal & maxillary vv.
Retromandibular vein Enters parotid
posterior to ramus of mandible
Retromandibular vein Splits into
2 divisions that drain into the EJV & IJV
Distal portion of External Carotid Artery lies deep
within parotid gland
ECA Parallels
retromandibular v. just deep to it
ECA splits into 2 branches:
Post. to mandibular neck, splits to 2 terminal branches
Superficial temporal a
Maxillary a
The parotid gland wraps around the posterior aspect of the
mandibular ramus
Facial n., external carotid a., and retromandibular v. within the
parotid gland
Deep to the parotid bed =
carotid sheath, containing internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and the vagus nerve.
Facial Nerve (CN VII) exits
cranium via stylomastoid foramen
Facial Nerve (CN VII) forms
parotid plexus within gland
CN VII Branches emerge &
fan out over lateral aspect of face
CN VII Leaves the brainstem and enters the Internal acoustic meatus and
travels through the temporal bone. Its sensory ganglion = the geniculate ganglion, lies within the temporal bone.
Contents of Temporal Fossa
temporal fat pad
Temporalis m
Masseter m
Neurovasculature
Temporalis m.
covered by thick temporal fascia
Masseter m
works with temporalis m. to elevate mandible (*Not content of Temporal fossa)
Masseter innervation
masseteric br. of CN V3
Temporal fat pad:
Enclosed in temporal fascia & fills out temple region
Between temporalis m. & lat. wall of orbit
Trigeminal N. Mandibular division (CN V3) nerves
Auriculotemporal Nerve
Ant. & Post. Deep Temporal nn
Auriculotemporal Nerve travels with
with Superficial temporal a & v
Auricotemporal nerve Runs deep to
parotid gland & post. to TMJ
Between the auricle & condyle of mandible
Auricotemporal nerve Provides sensory innervation to
to TMJ & lat. scalp
Auricotemporal nerve Carries
p-symp. fibers from CN IX into parotid gland
Ant. & Post. Deep Temporal nn. Passes
sup. to lat. Pterygoid m. & deep to temporalis m.
Infratemporal Fossa borders
Lateral – Ramus of mandible Medial – Lateral pterygoid plate Anterior – Maxilla Posterior – Tympanic plate, mastoid & styloid processes
Infratemporal fossa roof
Inferior surface of the Greater wing of the Sphenoid; Temporal bone
Foramen Ovale
Foramen Spinosum
Infratemporal Fossa Contents - muscles
temporalis, medial & lateral pterygoids mm
Infratemporal fossa contents A & V
Maxillary & brs; Pterygoid plexus of veins
Infratemporal fossa Nerves
Mandibular division of CN V (V3) Posterior superior alveolar n. (V2) Chorda tympani n. br of CN VII (Facial) Otic ganglion Lesser Petrosal n.
Remember the lateral border of the infratemporal fossa is the
mandibular ramus and its coronoid process
Remember also that the Temporalis m. is continuous
inferiorly from the temporal fossa into the infratemporal fossa
Medial Pterygoid m.
elevates, protrudes & rotates mandible
Lateral Pterygoid m.
opens, protrudes and rotates mandible
