9-26-WA-P283-294-FemaleOfRitualAndRitual Flashcards
On page 201, Smith Rosenberg writes, “Nineteenth-century American society did not taboo close female relationships but rather recognized them as a socially viable form of human contact–and, as such, acceptable throughout a woman’s life.” Describe the changes before and during this time period that made these kinds of relationships possible and acceptable.
The development of the public and private spheres increased the separation of men’s world and women’s world. With the increase in women’s literacy came the keeping of diaries. And with the education of women came an institutional setting for women to find and form deep friendships. Contact between men and women was highly ritualized - allowing for very little emotional intimacy between men and women.
