8.3 Population structure Flashcards
A population pyramid
a diagram that shows the proportion of the population that is male and female in different age groups
types of population structures
- expanding (HIGH BR & DR) pyramid shape
- stationary (HIGH BR, economically active, LOW DR)
- declining (LOW BR & LOW DR, old dependant population)
Young Dependents:
The number or the percentage of the population under the age of 16.
Old Dependents:
The number or the percentage of the population over the age of 65.
economically Active:
People between the ages of 16 and 65. This is basically the working group, are independant
If a pyramid has a wide base it
indicates ________
high birth rates
If there are a lot of old dependents it indicates
high life expectancy
less economically developed country (LEDC) population pyramid
- expanding population
- wide base–>high birth rate
- narrow top –>high death rate
- short life expectancy
- more young dependant than old dependant
more economically developed country (MEDC) population pyramid
- narrow base–> low birth rate
- broad shape at top–> high life expectancy
- high econmically active population
- straight/ rectangle shape
- elderly dependents
ad and dis of youthful population
ad-
* large and cheap future workforce
* large tax base for the country
dis-
* increases pension costs
* puts strain on education and health services
* lack of available jobs
* puts strain on available accommodation
sudden change in population
wars
diseases
mass migration
natural disaster
