2.6 Mangement of oil pollution Flashcards
strategies for reducing oil spills in marine environments: (3)
IMP- how to PREVENT OIL SPILL so this means oil spill HASNT happened
- follow MARPOL agreement
- double-hulled oil tankers
- use defined shipping routes
Full form of MARPOL
MARPOL= MARine POLlution
What is MARPOL
International agreement that prevents pollution from Ships
Regulations of the MARPOL:
- Supervise the transport of oil at sea so there is less discharge of oil waste
- All tankers must be certificated to show they have appropriate systems in use;
- Else, it can result in a heavy fine or the ship may not be permitted to leave port.
double-hulled oil tankers
- if the outer layer is damaged, the contents are still secure, the risks of oil spill are far less.
- double-hulled tankers cost more than single-hulled
both hulls must be damaged for spill to occur
use defined shipping routes;
reduces risk of collision;
strategies for minimizing the impacts of oil spills: (3)
IMP- how to minimize the EFFECTS of oil spill so this means the oil spill HAS happened
- Booms
- detergent sprays
- skimmers
Booms
a floating barrier is used to surround the oil slick, preventing it from spreading.
Detergent sprays
detergents help break down the oil slick into smaller droplets, that eventually degrade, and disperse
Skimmers
A device that collects and removes oil from the surface of the water
