8.1 Traits Flashcards
What is genotype?
The combination of alleles
What is phentype?
The visible traits that come from the combination of alleles
What does it mean to be homozygous?
When both alleles in a pair are either recessive or dominant
What does it mean to be heterozygous?
When there is a recessive and a dominant allele in a pair
What is co-dominance?
When the both traits from a heterozygous genotype are visible in the phenotype
How did Mendel set up his experiments?
He always started with two homozygous plants, one with recessive and one with dominant alleles, he always saw the ratio of 4/4 heterozygous in the resulting plants, and after he bred the second generation he always saw a ratio of 3/4 one phenotype and 1/4 recessive homozygous
How does a test cross work?
When two thing’s alleles for a trait are crossed for specific results.
What are the parent genotypes if the phenotypic ratio is 4/4 heterozygous?
One homozygous recessive and one homozygous dominant
What are the parents genotypes if the phenotypic ratio is 4/4 homozygous recessive?
both homozygous recessive
