7.4 meiosis Flashcards
What is meiosis?
A type of cell replication that consist of two parts and makes four genetically unique haploid gametes.
What is crossing over?
When homologous chromosomes swap pieces/alleles
What is independent assortment?
The 2 possibilities of how chromosomes are arranged in a cell during metaphase I that are both equally probable
Homologous chromosomes
A pair of chromosomes of the same size and have similar genes
What is a gamete?
Reproductive cell
What is fertilization?
When two gametes create a zygote by means of sexual reproduction
What are some characteristics of sexual reproduction?
uses gametes, high genetic variation, crossing over, meiosis, independent assortment
What are some characteristics of asexual reproduction?
uses somatic cells, low genetic variation, only genetic variation has to come from mutation
What are some characteristics of the daughter cells of meiosis?
Four genetically different haploid gametes
