5.2 Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
The chemical processes that allows a living organism to maintain life
What is an anabolic reaction?
Making larger molecules out of smaller ones
What is a catabolic reaction?
Breaking down lager molecules to make smaller ones
What is an exergonic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy (Ex: Hydrolysis/ catabolism)
What is an endergonic reaction?
A reaction that requires an input of energy (Ex: dehydration synthesis/ anabolism)
What do cells do with the energy from the ATP cycle?
Chemical work, transport work, mechanical work
When is the ATP cycle endergonic?
When energy and a phosphate is added to ADP
Why do exergonic reactions have to occur before endergonic reactions?
Bonds have to be broken before they can be formed/ energy has to be released before it is utilized
When is the ATP cycle exergonic?
When energy is released and a phosphate is removed from ATP
What does the graph of an exergonic reaction look like?
More reactants and less products
