What is GA?
Gestational age
How is GA calculated at first?
Duration of pregnancy starting from the date of the last menstrual period (LMP)
What is EDD?
Estimated Delivery Date (40 weeks gestation)
When is the EDD updated?
After the dating scan
What does G stand for?
Gravida - Total number of pregnancies the a woman has had
What does P stand for?
Para - number of times the woman has given birth after 24 weeks gestation (alive or stillborn)
What does primiparous mean?
(technically means someone who has given birth once before)
It is used on labour wards to describe someone who is about to give birth for the first time.
What does gestational age 5 + 3 mean?
5 weeks and 3 days
What does GA 13 + 6 mean?
13 weeks and 6 days pregnant
What is the G and P of someone who is pregnant and had 3 previous deliveries?
G4 P3
What is the G and P for someone not pregnant but who had twins?
G1 P1
What is the G and P for someone not pregnant and had a previous miscarriage?
G1 P0 +1
What is the G and P for someone not pregnant and had a previous stillbirth?
G1 P1
What weeks does the 2nd trimester start and end?
13 weeks until 26 weeks
When do fetal movements start?
Start at 20 weeks and continue until birth.
What are the main scans/clinics/events during pregnancy and what happens at them?
- booking scan - assessment and plan
- dating scan - GA calculated, crown rump length, nuchal translucency, twins etc
- antenatal appointment - results and plan
- Anomaly scan - heart etc
- multiple antenata appointments
When does booking scan ideally happen?
Before 10 weeks
When does the dating scan happen?
Between 10-14 weeks
When does the 1st antenatal appointment to discuss results and plan happen?
16 weeks
When does the anomaly scan happen?
Between 18-21 weeks
When do antenatal appointments happen?
25, 28, 31, 34
36, 38, 40
41, 42
What extra appointments/ tests might women get and why?
OGTT if risk of gestational diabetes (24-28 weeks)
Anti-D injection if rhesus negative (28 and 34 weeks)
US scan at 32 weeks if there was placenta previa on anomaly scan
Serial growth scans if risk of fetal growth restriction
What things are done / covered at each routine antenatal appointment?
- discuss plans
- symphysis-fundal height measured from 24 weeks
- fetal presentation assessed from 36 weeks
- blood pressures
- urine for microscopy for asymptomatic bacteriuria
What vaccines are given to pregnant women?
- whooping cough (pertussis) from 16 weeks
- flu vaccines when available
(no live vaccines - no MMR)
