A

Traditional can only be delayed 3 hours. More than 3 hrs is a missed pill.

Desogestrel-only pill can be 12 hrs late. More than 12 hrs late is a missed pill.

What is a common side effect of POP?

A

Unscheduled bleeding, settle down after 3 months.

20% have no bleeding
40% have regular bleeding
40% have irregular, prolonged or troublesome bleeding

(investigate for STI, preg, cancer if persistent bleeding more than 3 months)

A

  • breast tenderness
  • headaches
  • acne

A

More than 3 hours late for a traditional POP (more than 26 hours after the last pill)

(e.g. Norgeston or Noriday)
(Micronor, Norgeston, Noriday, Femulen)

A

More than 12 hours late for the desogestrel-POP (more than 36 hours after the last pill)

(e.g. Cerazette)

What do you do if you have missed a POP pill?

A

Take pill as soon as you remember and continue next one at usual time (ie two in 24hrs)

Use condoms for 48hrs

If you have UPSI since missed pill or within 48hrs of starting then Emergency Contraception.

(D&V counts as a missed pill, so condoms until 48hrs on normal pill taking)
