Inhibits ovulation

Day 1-5 without extra precautions
After day 5 you need 7 days of condoms first
How is it inserted and removed?
Lidocaine + special device for insertion
Small incision to remove (contraception needed immediately after)

Drawback of progestogen-only implant?
- minor op for insertion and removal
- worsening of acne
- no STI protection
- can cause problem bleeding
- can get bent or fractured
- can become deep and impalpable (Ix needed)
What makes the progestogen-only implant radio-opaque?
Nexplanon adds barium sulphate which is radio-opaque
What can help manage problem bleeding with progestogen-only implant?
COCP for 3 months

1/3 infrequent bleeding
1/4 frequent or prolonged bleeding
1/5 have no bleeding
remainder have normal periods
