cervical ectopy or
cervical erosion
What has happened for cervical ectropion to occur?
columnar epithelium of the endocervix has extended out to the ectocervix
What is cervical ectropion associated with?
higher oestrogen levels ie:
- younger women
- COCP
- pregnancy
What cells meet at the transformation zone?
columnar epithelium of the endocervix meets
stratified squamous epithelium of ectocervix
(visible on speculum exam)
How might a cervical ectropion present?
many are asymptomatic and incidental finding on speculum.
present:
- increased vaginal discharge
- vaginal bleeding
- dyspareunia
- postcoital bleeding
Management of cervical ectropion?
asymptomatic - require no treatment
problematic bleeding?
- cauterisation using silver nitrate or cold coagulation during colposcopy
(not associated with cancer at all)
